Is Fashion Art?

For the love of fashion, what is art?

This can be a wide a varied answer depending on who you talk to. The dictionary states ‘the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.’

Have we seen the famous catwalk show of Alexander McQueen whose model, dressed in white, rotated whilst being sprayed with two paint robots from Fiat? It was 1999 and at the time was extremely creative and unique. The main inspiration had possibly evolved from two guns shooting at each other however if we look at this overall, it is performance art that can be worn which begs the question is fashion art?

Comparing the two side by side, each has a concept, each is creative, requires inspiration and someone to complete the piece. At the end of the process, we have physical products however they are on different mediums; one is less fluid, mostly remaining static whilst one is free to travel.

Considering equal amounts of investment at the lower end of the scale, we have products that are replaced easily and more often; with larger investments they become a piece with longevity.

Each product requires the consumer or purchaser to desire it enough to buy; fairly similar so far.

So, does the difference come down to the normality of it? Clothes are an everyday item, a form of expression yet needed daily and common. People dress for the occasion, work, the school run or a night out, clothing has many levels of requirements. Fashion has been created and designed by a talented individual or group. It has many aspects, fabric colour shape and functionality. all of these aspects come together in a final piece.

Art is also created by a group or individual but is not necessary, has a smaller percentage of people who love and respect it and possible ‘get it’, this makes it more unusual and possibly more of a thing. So art can be more unique, one offs but take Haute Couture into account and we have two similar products.

So, in answer to my question, Is Fashion Art?

Every fashion designer is a unique and creative person with vision and imagination. Every creation has been thought of and designed with the consumer in mind.

Fashion it is a form of expression, our outward view of how we want the world to see us. It is also each individual’s art of creation in the most exquisite way. There is an art to that…
