Lilian Bland — Daring to Defy

Lilian Bland was anything but “blind” to adventure. Born in 1878, she defied the conventions of her era with fearless independence. She drove cars, rode bicycles, shot game, wore trousers, and even ran a car dealership—activities highly unconventional for women of her time. Her boldness and curiosity extended naturally to the skies. In 1910, combining mechanical skill with imagination, she designed, built, and flew her own aircraft, the Mayfly, becoming the first woman in Ireland to achieve powered flight. Lilian’s pioneering spirit, resourcefulness, and refusal to accept limits made her a true trailblazer, proving that innovation and courage know no gender or boundary.
