Lilian Bland — Fearless and Unconventional
Lilian Bland, born in 1878, was a pioneering aviator, journalist, and a woman far ahead of her time. In an age when strict Edwardian norms dictated how women should behave and dress, Lilian refused to conform. She wore trousers, rode horses astride, smoked, hunted, and even practiced jujitsu — activities that scandalized polite society.
Her independence and confidence often drew criticism. In one memorable instance, a priest in Tipperary reportedly urged locals to stone her for the way she rode her horse. Instead, the community defied his command and cheered her on — a testament to the admiration she inspired wherever she went.
Lilian Bland lived life on her own terms, breaking barriers not only in aviation but in the expectations placed upon women of her time.
