Hidden in Plain Sight recontextualises a vintage ceramic plate as a contemporary wall piece, shifting it from functional domestic object to site of cultural reflection.
The plate — historically bound to the rituals of home and service — becomes a subtle ground upon which overlooked narratives surface. Its familiar form references the confined domestic sphere within which many women’s labour, creativity, and intellect were contained. Through contemporary printed intervention and hand embellishment, the surface is interrupted and reconsidered.
Partially obscured portraiture resists immediate recognition. The viewer is asked to look twice — to question how history remembers, whom it centres, and whom it allows to fade into the periphery.
A recurring Carrickmacross lace motif threads through the composition, operating as both material reference and metaphor. Traditionally crafted by women in private spaces and worn publicly by others, the lace embodies artistry rendered invisible — intricate, essential, and frequently uncredited.
Measured and restrained in palette, yet conceptually resonant, this work occupies a space between preservation and disruption. It invites contemplation of legacy, authorship, and the subtle persistence of women’s influence within Irish cultural identity.
